During 1984, Mary Kate Pearce petitioned the Session to approve the formation of an organization to pull together the senior church members for fun and fellowship. The Session did approve the formation of such a group, effective Jan. 1, 1985, and it was called "None Under Fifty Five." In very short time the organization was shortened to "NUFF." Today, 16 years later, there are 101 dues-paying members, and the estimated average age is 79. The youngest member is 55 and the oldest 94. NUFFs gather monthly for an organizational meeting, program and lunch. There were 40 charter members. The estimated average age of this group was 69. The youngest member was 57 and the oldest 78. Over the years, there have been 14 presidents who have led the group. In our 16 year history, 225 persons have joined the organization. Thirty-two of these persons are inactive, and 16 have moved to other churches in Amarillo or to other cities. The Lord has called home 64 members. Edith Howell is the most recent addition to this category. I met Edith on our return to First Church in 1987. For some reason, when I saw Edith the first name that came to me was "Helen." Finally I told Edith of my problem. She said, "That is no problem, I like the name, you can call me Helen." So from that day on I did. We had a lot of fun with this charade. She was a most delightful and wonderful person. There are currently 101 active members who are up to date on their dues. Only about half of these attend the monthly meetings.
