There's a place for you on Wednesdays

Here are the programs being offered this fall during Wednesdays at First. Classes begin Sept. 5.

Growing Stronger in Prayer
6:30-8 p.m. - Chapel
Lead by: Jim Bankhead

We will first and foremost be praying. To grow stronger in prayer, you have to give time to do it. We will also look at Scripture on praying and debrief “prayer experiences," good ones, disturbing ones and painful ones. If you desire to grow stronger in your prayer life, join us.

Living with Loss … While Others Are Celebrating
6:30 to 8 p.m.
From Sept. 26 - Nov. 28 in Room 207
Lead by: Mary Rogers-Ellsworth

The group will use “A Decembered Grief" by Harold Ivan Smith to help us journey through loss and consider how grief becomes more intense during the holidays. Weeks usually spent celebrating may now become marred by frequent awkwardness, unpredictable emotions and conflicting obligations.

Holidays and special days are challenges as we wander through the worlds of life and loss. Smith's wisdom and insight help anticipate these challenges and recognize God's ability to miraculously transform them into times of grace and healing.

Children having a blast at KidZone

“Is it time for KidZone yet, Mom? I can't wait for KidZone night!" I overheard one of our children excitedly ask recently. KidZone is our new Wednesday night program for children ages preschool through fifth grade.

We are having a blast on Wednesday nights — growing friendships, growing as Jesus' disciples and mentoring. We start the evening off by gathering together for a yummy, home-cooked supper at 6:30 in Fellowship Hall.

The older children, known affectionately as “big buddies," each adopt a younger “little buddy" and assist them through the line with their plate of food. The big buddies act as role models during supper as the children interact with each other. What a blessing and encouragement this has been to watch! After supper, we break into age groups for a Bible lesson, songs, games and activities.

Our preschoolers are enjoying a fun semester of KidZone theme nights. We have been fishermen (fishers of men), treasure hunters (the Bible was our greatest treasure!), shepherds (exploring Psalm 23), and even beachcombers at our indoor beach (the house built on the rock stood firm!), to name a few.

One particularly special night was our Patriotic Night when we celebrated being Americans and celebrated our nation's history of worshipping the one true God! We collected socks for the “Socks for Soldiers" campaign.

Preschool KidZone theme nights will continue next semester, too. Be watching for more details! FYI: It's not too late to join us at KidZone! Make plans to be there next Wednesday!
